Was Judas Iscariot saved?
The above question is often a debated topic among Christians concerning the eternal destiny of Judas Iscariot. There are some group of Christians who believe Judas was never saved during the time he walked with Jesus. They believe though he was chosen by Jesus to be one of his disciples, yet he was never saved, but the rest of the disciples rested in Christ alone for salvation. Other class of believers refutes the teaching that Judas was never saved. They hold the view he was chosen by Christ to be an apostle like the rest of the eleven, but unfortunately at a point in his life, his heart waxed cold and he betrayed his master for 30 pieces of silver, and as a result he lost his salvation. The truth is that both sides cannot be right. One has to be right whiles the other must be wrong. So the question is this, which of the two views is much more consistent with what God's word teaches? The answer to this question can be found in the holy writ, therefore I beseech thee by the mercies of God to stay with me as I exegete the truth of the gospel.
Who was Judas Iscariot?
Judas Iscariot was one of the twelve apostles of Christ, see (Luke 6; 16). Judas was taught and instructed by Jesus just like the rest of the disciples. He was endued with power to preach the gospel and to heal all manner of sicknesses and disease exactly the same way as the rest of the disciples (Matthew 10; 7-8). Judas was with Jesus in his missionary journeys, and he often sat under his feet and listened to his teachings. He was privileged not only to listen to his teachings, but also to behold his miraculous deeds which authenticated his claim to be the Christ, the Son of the living God (Matthew 16; 16). Judas was close to his master and yet at a point he betrayed him for thirty pieces of silver because of his greed, see (Matthew 26: 14-50). Judas betrayal of Jesus actually led to his crucifixion on the cross.
But Judas later regretted his actions and hanged himself to death. The bible says: Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He had been condemned, he felt remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, "I have sinned by betraying innocent blood." But they said, "What is that to us? See to that yourself!" And he threw the pieces of silver into the temple sanctuary and departed; and he went away and hanged himself (Matthew 27:3-5). Judas though he felt remorse, nevertheless, he did not turn towards God in repentance, but chose rather to hang himself. Judas only felt bad because he had betrayed an innocent man and that was all, he never cried out to God for mercy but expedited himself to death. This is a brief history of Judas Iscariot, son of Simon Iscariot.
Was Judas Iscariot saved?
Of a truth Judas Iscariot was never saved from the beginning. He was called to be an apostle, granted supernatural power to heal the sick and to cast out devils, yet he was never saved. Judas Iscariot was with Jesus always, but his heart was far away from him. Judas was the treasurer and was specifically called a thief, because he has been stealing from the money bag, see (John 12; 6). Also it is written: Jesus answered them, "Did I Myself not choose you, the twelve, and yet one of you is a devil?" (John 6; 70). If Judas was truly saved there was no way Jesus would have referred to him has a devil. Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who it was that would betray Him (John 6:64). Jesus said to Peter: "He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you. For He knew the one who was betraying Him; for this reason He said, "Not all of you are clean (John 13:10-11). Even before he betrayed him, Jesus knew in advance that he was not clean, his heart was desperately wicked. Jesus in his high priestly prayer he said: While I was with them, I was keeping them in Your name which You have given Me; and I guarded them and not one of them perished but the son of perdition, so that the Scripture would be fulfilled (John 17: 12).
Judas was described by Jesus as the Son of perdition, in order words he was the son of destruction which also confirms the truth that he was never saved to begin with. Jesus also made this strong statement: The Son of Man is to go, just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born (Matthew 26; 24). It was written that Jesus will be betrayed, but Judas out of the wickedness of his heart fulfilled the scriptures, and Jesus said it will have been better if he had not been born. Judas Iscariot was with Jesus but he was not saved, he was unconverted though he was part of the apostles. We have many preachers of the gospel like Judas, though they preach the gospel, yet deep down they have no personal relationship with Jesus.
Though Judas was numbered with the apostles, but that does not mean he had saving faith in Jesus Christ. Judas Iscariot was devoid of saving faith, and his betrayal without genuine repentance towards God was a manifested proof he was not truly saved. Judas did not lose his salvation as some falsely teaches, he never acknowledged Jesus as his Lord and Savior, he was not saved in the first place. But the rest of the apostles had true faith because they persevered, even in the midst of intense persecution unto the end. Was Judas saved? No he wasn't saved, even though he literally walked with the Man Jesus Christ. God bless you
